Special Educational Needs (SEN) - Process

Detailed below is a generic process that is in line with the SEN Code of Practice but may differ slightly within each Local Authority

SEN Process

  • School identifies the children that need extra support
  • SENCO identifies child's Special Educational Needs (SEN)
  • SENCO formulates Special Needs - Individual Action Plans (IAP)
  • Local Authority (LA) involved at 'School Action Plus' stage + school support team. Educational Psychologists, and Clinical Psychologists where necessary
  • Legal document (Statement) issued by LA detailing child's SEN
  • Where possible Statement SEN are met in Mainstream school (MS)
  • Annual review with LA - Statement modified or agreement to move to Pupil Referral Unit (PRU)
  • Child not excluded from MS unless absolutely necessary and no other options available
  • If unable to meet child's needs, child is sent to PRU
  • PRU has to be provided by LA - short term for a place in a Special Placement
  • If unable to return child to MS school, LA look for a place in a Special Placement
  • LA can pass PRU if presented with an extreme child
