EducationOpportunities Educational provision for children and young people with BESD (Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties) consists of a range of settings:
- Mainstream schools - where children with SEN (Special Educational Needs) are supported at School Action and School Action Plus or through a Statement
- Specialist mainstream schools - which have a particular SEN specialism and provide outreach to other schools
- Resourced Provision - where places are reserved at a mainstream school for pupils with a Statement for a specific type of SEN. Pupils are taught mainly within mainstream classes but also use a base and some specialist facilities around the school
- Designated Unit - where pupils with a Statement of a specific type of SEN are taught wholly or mainly in separate classes specifically provided within a mainstream school
- Off-site alternative provision for pupils permanently excluded (Pupil Referral Units)
- Special school - organised specifically to cater for children with BESD Statements (Maintained* - day and residential)
- Specialist special school - schools which have a particular SEN or curricular specialism and provide outreach to other schools
- Co-location - children with Statements are educated in separate special school facilities with separate staff but on-site with a mainstream school or vice versa. There should be some interchange of pupils, resources, staff and dual use of facilities
- Non maintained* special schools (day and residential)
- Independent* special schools (day and residential)
