Co-opted MemberDr Tina Rae

Dr Tina Rae has a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Education and a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Professional Educational Psychology. She has also conducted research on the topic of children missing education for the Doctrate in applied child and educational psychology at the University of East London and been awarded the qualification of Doctor of Applied Child and Educational Psychology. She has 25 years experience working with children, adults and families in both clinical and educational contexts within local authorities and specialist educational services.

She is trained to use range of psychometric tests in making assessments of intelligence, personality, emotional development, well being, cognition and learning in children and young people. Tina specialises in social, emotional and behavioural disorders and difficulties. She has undertaken research in the areas of engagement and disaffection with learning in young people, debriefing following critical incidents, attachment disorders, emotional well being and the psychological assessment of young offenders.

Tina is experienced in assessing children and young people with respect to learning difficulties, emotional well being and relationships with carers and such assessments include the following:

  • a history and/or suspicion of emotional, physical, sexual abuse and neglect
  • attachment/bonding related issues
  • the social and emotional needs of young people
  • cultural issues

Tina is also experienced in working therapeutically with children and young people and their parents/carers. She is a registered member of the Health Professions Council and a full member of the British Psychological Society. She was also an Hononary lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of East London and is currently a Professional and Academic tutor on the Doctorate in Child and Educational Psychology at UEL. Tina is a member of the SEBDA Council and a co-opted member of the engage in their future National Committe.

Tina is a prolific author and has written extensively on topics such as well being, attachment, emotional literacy, behavioural problems, anger and stress management, critical incidents, cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, solution focused brief therapy, loss and bereavement in young people, youth offending and social skills development. Her 62 publications to date can be accessed via Sage publications, Paul Chapman publishing, Folens publishers and Optimus publications. Tina contributed to the development of the secondary SEAL curriculum (small group activities) for the DCSF. She has most recently written the Well Being curriculum (14-19) for the Welsh Assembly Government and also writes the regular bulletins for Social and Emotional Learning update newsletter.

Tina also contributes to national and international conferences and events on a regular basis including those for the Social and Emotional Behavioural Difficulties Association (SEBDA), engage in their future and Optimus whilst also providing training courses for school based staff in both special and mainstream contexts and Educational Psychology services across the country.
