History engage in their future History in chronological order:
- Original roots developed from the South West Region ‘Special Schools’ Conferences
- At the 1990 Conference the EBD (Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties) Heads formed the South West Region EBD group which thrived throughout the 90s
- By 1998 the success of the South West group persuaded members that a National Association was the next logical step to take
- EBD Heads from across the County were invited to a South West regional event and the nucleus of the National Association emerged (December 1998)
- engage in their future (National Association of EBD schools) was formed in 1998 (first meeting held 8th January 1999) to enable Headteachers within the EBD sector to give peer support and influence EBD issues locally, regionally and nationally.
- 2004 – The Government added ‘Social’ to the description in order to cover the whole spectrum of issues. EBD (Emotional Behavioural Difficulties) became BESD (Behavioural, Emotional and Social Difficulties). To date, although the name of the Association has been changed to reflect BESD, the acronym has not.
- 2005 – engage in their future became a registered charity – No. 1110473.
- 2008 – CEO appointed to run the National Association.
